BASE SYNOPSIS

Like every episode, old Randy starts his day off being warmly greeted by June, the empathetic barista who always refers to him by his last name. From the backroom of the coffee shop (which June, and the coffee shop owners provide for him) Randy introduces each new episode before taking his listeners on a dark and comical journey into his wild youth as a struggling musician on the East side of Vancouver.

With a superb musical score written and performed by David Fesliyan, Sarkis Fesliyan, David Renda, and Steve Oxen, the story line is instantly compelling and entertaining.

A dark comedy audio drama

The Randy Darling Podcast is a series of podcast short story episodes that employs dark humor throughout the narration. Avid listeners keep a keen eye out for the hidden and underlying jokes as well (examples below). The actual events, and twists, are often humorous, but not always intended that way. It depends on the listener’s own unique perspective.

Warning: Possible Spoilers below

Example One: In Ep 1 “Harsh Advice from the Thief Next Door”, Ola comes on strong with advice for Randy and his roommates Mark and Dan, like some kind of self-help guru. When, in fact, he’s a criminal with a record for grand theft auto, assault, breaking and entering, and drug trafficking.

Example Two: In the Ep 2 “The Benzos and Bully (Part I)” the character Jasper is described as wearing pleated dress pants, a golf shirt, and cowboy boots, with a long blond mullet and long sideburns. The first words out of his mouth are “Look sharp everyone!”

A dark comedy audio drama based in Vancouver

The Randy Darling Podcast is series of podcast short story episodes set in Vancouver. Some of the episodes are based on Randy’s experiences struggling as a young musician in East Vancouver. In EP 2, when describing his hellish ride on the transit due to his undiagnosed agoraphobia, he says, “Sometimes I flew with the birds clear above Gastown and clear over the Lions Gate Bridge”. This is the first time listeners learn that Randy’s stories all take place in the Greater Vancouver area.

Without creating spoilers, there will be future episodes about Randy’s adventures on the North Shore (North Vancouver), which of course include his struggle to keep his sanity while riding the SeaBus across the Burrard Inlet. There is another episode set in Vancouver’s West End, and another at the intersection of Granville and Davie.

FAQS:

1) Where is the coffee shop located in Vancouver? Listeners often ask where in Vancouver is the coffee shop that Randy goes into at the beginning of each episode. It’s located on East King Edward Avenue which is just down the block from where old Randy lives in a small basement suite owned by his niece and her husband. We can’t divulge the exact location or the crossing street, but the locals can easily figure it out 😉

2) Why does old Randy record his podcast in the back of the coffee shop? Old Randy lives on a shoestring budget, with money from his social security, and Canada pension. He never had consistent employment in his adult life due to his mental health struggles, and lives in a small basement suite provided by his niece and her husband. June, the empath barista, other staff, and the owners of the coffee shop have known Randy for decades as a regular who comes in almost every day to write his short stories (at a corner table they set up just for him). June encouraged Randy to dictate some of his stories into a microphone connected to an old iPad she chipped in to buy with the other staff members and owners. Randy reluctantly gives it a try and starts using the backroom of the coffee shop whenever it’s empty. After Randy finishes dictating his story, June takes the recording to her son who mixes in some music and sound effects to highlight the story.

3) Where in Vancouver is young Randy living in the stories? The young 20-year-old Randy lives in an apartment building with his roommates Dan and Mark, located near East Hasting Street and Renfrew Street.

4) Where in Vancouver did young Randy grow up as a child? Young Randy was raised by his Mother in the Mount Pleasant area, on East 10 Ave. His father died in a car accident when he was 10 years old. He spent most of his time in his room playing his guitar and writing his stories. He graduated from Gladstone Secondary School.

A dark comedy audio drama about mental health and agoraphobia

Randy Darling Podcast is series of podcast short story episodes whose main character (Randy Darling) suffers with agoraphobia that teeters from severe to manageable depending on the situation. However, the episodes/stories do not revolve around Randy’s agoraphobia. In fact, many episodes don’t mention his agoraphobia at all. However, avid followers who listen to episodes multiple times begin to see how Randy’s mental fragility is ever present.

In Ep 2: “The Benzos and the Bully (Part I)” is when listeners first learn of Randy’s condition which he tries to minimize in his narration. He was deeply ashamed of his condition when he was a younger man. He excepts it now, but he still attempts to shrug it off as “no big deal”. When in fact, it has been a very big deal. He has struggled his entire adult life to find jobs and keep jobs due his of agoraphobia.

FAQS:

1) How severe is Randy’s agoraphobia in the stories when he’s a young man: Randy is undiagnosed with agoraphobia until his late 20s. During these episodes he is in his early 20s. The severity of his condition varies throughout his life, and to manage early on he self-medicates. A lot.

2) Does old Randy still suffer with agoraphobia? Yes, but he knows what it is now, and has lived with it for decades. He takes medication and sees a doctor to manage it. However, he rarely travels in motorized vehicles and ventures only short distances from his basement suite. His niece, her husband, and the staff at the coffee shop encourage him to get out of the house for a walk to the coffee shop once a day for exposure therapy.

A dark comedy audio drama about being a musician

The Randy Darling Podcast is a series of podcast short story episodes that are based around the main character Randy who is a musician in his early 20s living in East Vancouver. His main passion in life is his love of music (and Indica).

In the first episode Randy is convinced the criminal Ola next door is planning to steal his Fender Telecaster guitar, his vinyl record collection, and his “unique, one-of-kind hand-crafted water bong.”

In the second episode Randy tries and succeeds in getting hired to work at a musical equipment store on the other side of the city. Most of the episode takes place in the musical equipment store called Jasper’s Elite Music. Scenes take place in Jasper’s office, the drum room, the guitar room, the keyboards room with Angie, and of course the fateful school band instruments storage room.

In episode 2 the character Angie is a classically trained pianist going to VAM (Vancouver Academy of Music). Another character is the leader of a the “East Van Wailers”, a Bob Marley tribute band. During these scenes Randy and the band leader listen to Peter Tosh and other reggae artists while they’re moving furniture.

In episode 4, “The Fear, the Gig & the Gang Fight”, Randy and his musician friends get their big break to be the opening act for a major Canadian rock group, “Her Pinkertons”. Most of story takes place at the 50 room rehearsal building and the gig at the PNE Amphitheatre.

The main character and his friends are struggling musicians, but not every episode focuses primarily on the music business or these young musicians. It just so happens that music is a major part of their lives.

Music in Randy Darling Podcast is written and performed by David Fesliyan, Sarkis Fesliyan, David Renda, and Steve Oxen of Fesliyan Studios. In summation; the main characters are musicians, all episodes feature original scores from multiple musical genres, scenes ranging from street busking, bar gigs, stadium gigs, and festival gigs. Music genres include Reggae, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Rock & Roll, Classical, Opera, R&B, Soul, Hip Hop and more.
